York has been named European Tourism City of the Year at the European Cities Tourism Awards. It has always been an important city for travellers; it is a central part of both road and rail networks.
York - everything you need
York is the cultural capital of the north of England, and is an ideal place to learn English whatever your interests. This riverside city is one of the oldest in Britain, founded by the Romans almost 2000 years ago. It has ancient city walls, beautiful historic streets and many wonderful buildings including the world-famous York Minster, the largest Medieval Gothic Cathedral in northern Europe.
York has everything you would expect from a modern city. There are excellent restaurants and bars, a wide variety of shops, museums, galleries, theatres, cinemas, and sports clubs. It is a compact city, and is very safe and friendly.
The city centre - where the ELC is located - is closed to traffic each day. This ensures a very peaceful and safe environment for our students.
York is also in the centre of Britain - less than 2 hours from London and just over 2 hours from Edinburgh. The city is surrounded by beautiful countryside, and within easy reach of the seaside resorts of Scarborough and Whitby and the famous English Lake District.
The school's year-round social programme takes advantage of all that York and the surrounding area has to offer.
