In June 2007 York was named European Tourism City of the Year
at the European Cities Tourism Awards.York is the cultural capital of the
north of England, and is an ideal place to learn English
whatever your interests. This riverside city is one of the oldest
in Britain, founded by the Romans almost 2000 years ago. It has
ancient city walls, beautiful historic streets and many wonderful buildings
including the world-famous York Minster, the largest Medieval
Gothic Cathedral in northern Europe.
York has everything you would expect from a modern city.
There are excellent restaurants and bars, a wide variety of
shops, museums, galleries, theatres, cinemas, and sports
clubs. It is a compact city, and is very safe and friendly.
The city centre - whre the ELC is located - is closed to traffic each day.
This ensures a very peaceful and safe environment for our students.
York is also in the centre of Britain - about 2 hours from both London and Edinburgh.
The city is surrounded by beautiful countryside, and within easy
reach of the seaside resorts of Scarborough and Whitby and the
Lake District.
The school's year-round social programme takes advantage of
all that York and the surrounding area has to offer.
Entertainment in York includes:
Cinemas and theatres
Museums and art galleries
Traditional pubs, modern bars and clubs
